Celebrating Year 6 Science Engage Week
"Engage week has been brilliant for the children.
Even the children who sometimes find things tricky, got involved yesterday and were engaged in all of the activities."
Feedback from the teachers at Westfield Primary Community School
The week of 3rd June was Year 6 Science Engage Week for our partner school Westfield Primary
The team at The Place and The University of York planned a fantastic week of activities, supported by York Cares.
This followed the success of Maths and English Engage weeks earlier in the year, and aimed to improve confidence with science, expose pupils to a broad range of careers in science and support their class learning.
"It was lovely seeing the smiles on their faces and also having the chance do more Science with them. The children have been asking more questions about Science and they have been interested to find about the different careers they could have in Science as well."
Feedback from the teachers at Westfield Primary Community School
The week started with a trip to The University of York Campus, completing workshops with different departments on robotics, astrophysics and conservation!
Tuesday brought The Place team and a team of volunteers from Fera to Westfield Primary, where they extracted DNA from strawberries and studied aphids under the microscope.
On Wednesday the activities were at The Place, and pupils worked with the University of York Chemistry department to detect acids and alkalis in red cabbage.
Thursday was a trip to Askham Bryan Wildlife Park to learn about the animals and all the outdoor careers that are available.
By Friday, Year 6 were back at school finding out how chocolate is made with Nestle, learning about what engineers do with Arup and being introduced to computer science with Beneden Health.

Our vision
Our vision is to provide a safe space for children and young people to learn and grow, and for adults to connect and access support.
At The Place we are focused on improving the lives of children and young people by working directly with them in partnership with the adults who live alongside them.
With belief in the power of education and opportunity to transform lives, The Place empowers young people to realise their aspirations.
