The team at The Place and The University of York planned a fantastic week of activities, supported by York Cares.
This followed the success of Maths and English Engage weeks earlier in the year, and aimed to improve confidence with science, expose pupils to a broad range of careers in science and support their class learning.

The week started with a trip to The University of York Campus, completing workshops with different departments on robotics, astrophysics and conservation!
Tuesday brought The Place team and a team of volunteers from Fera to Westfield Primary, where they extracted DNA from strawberries and studied aphids under the microscope.
On Wednesday the activities were at The Place, and pupils worked with the University of York Chemistry department to detect acids and alkalis in red cabbage.
Thursday was a trip to Askham Bryan Wildlife Park to learn about the animals and all the outdoor careers that are available.
By Friday, Year 6 were back at school finding out how chocolate is made with Nestle, learning about what engineers do with Arup and being introduced to computer science with Beneden Health.
Whilst The Place programme has a main focus on children and young people, we know the impact that supporting a whole community can have. We are committed to partnering with local residents, organisations, charities and employers who can provide their services and expertise in Sanderson Community House to local residents of all ages.

Our vision is to provide a safe space for children and young people to learn and grow, and for adults to connect and access support.
At The Place we are focused on improving the lives of children and young people by working directly with them in partnership with the adults who live alongside them.
With belief in the power of education and opportunity to transform lives, The Place empowers young people to realise their aspirations.
Get in contact with us or York High School directly - all you need to do is let us know your young persons school year, the item(s) required and size and we'll liaise with the school for you.
