The team at The Place and The University of York plan a fantastic week of activities each term, supported by York Cares. In these weeks bring the core subjects of Maths, English and Science to life in for over 70 children. Engage Weeks offer academic and cultural enrichment, expose pupils to a broad range of careers and support their class learning in those subjects.
English Engage saw workshops with York Theatre Royal, trips to our local library and on to campus to learn about radio production, story telling and script writing. Aviva volunteers came along to explore the language skills needed in digital design.
Math Engage week kicked off with an brilliant session with the students of the Griff Investment fund. We visited the National STEM Learning Centre, learned from Maths academics, and experienced how our maths skills help us in the world of work from volunteers at Nestle and Aviva!

Science Engage is the last of the year and in 2025, the week started with the Physics, Engineering and Technology students, completing workshops on robotics, astrophysics and vitural reality!
On Wednesday the activities were at The Place, and pupils worked with the University of York Chemistry department to detect acids and alkalis in red cabbage.
Thursday brought The Place team and a team of volunteers from Fera to Westfield Primary, where they extracted DNA from strawberries and diagnosed plant diseases under the microscope.
Friday was a trip to Askham Bryan Wildlife Park to learn about the animals, zoology, agriculture and all the outdoor careers that are available.
We even found time to celebrate the whole of Year 6 being SATs Superstars!
Whilst The Place programme has a main focus on children and young people, we know the impact that supporting a whole community can have. We are committed to partnering with local residents, organisations, charities and employers who can provide their services and expertise in Sanderson Community House to local residents of all ages.

At The Place we are focused on improving the lives of children and young people by working directly with them in partnership with the adults who live alongside them.
With belief in the power of education and opportunity to transform lives, The Place empowers young people to realise their aspirations.
